Elysian Quartet, one of the UK's premier contemporary string quartets

Hello again…

So we have some shows coming up. One of the shows will involve some helicopters. Can you guess what we’ll be playing? Yes, well done – you guessed correctly! We’re very excited that on October 5th we’ll be performing Stockhausen’s Helicopter String Quartet once again, with Sound Intermedia (Ian Dearden and Dave Sheppard) at the helm, doing the difficult job of balancing the sound of the string quartet and the four helicopters. This time we will be in Paris, as part of the annual festival Nuit Blanche. We will be starting the concert in the Monnaie de Paris, before heading through the hopefully-not-too-busy streets of Paris to our choppers and flying along the Seine, trying not to take our eyes from the scores as we pass the Eiffel Tower etc. Do wish us luck. Or come and see it!

Nuit Blanche haven’t published their complete programme for the night yet, but here is a page with more info about the festival in case anyone fancies a quick trip to Paris:

In other news, this Friday 20th September we will be joining the wonderful Catalan singer and multi-instrumentalist Clara Sanabras at Kings Place for the launch of her album ‘Scattered Flight’, on which we played the fantastic arrangements of Harvey Brough. Harvey will be playing on Friday too, as will Fred Thomas and Attab Haddad, and Ben Davis will be joining us on cello. But we will be forcing him to wear Laura’s clothes and shoes so as not to upset the balance of the quartet. Also, Simon Schama will be doing a Q & A before the show!

On October 9th we’ll be at the Barbican joining Plaid for a performance of their score for the anime film Tekkonkinkreet.

More shows later this autumn including a new dance production of Macbeth, more Clara Sanabras gigs and a Blackheath Halls performance – details soon…

It’s not autumn anymore, is it…

So the winter months saw the Elysians teaming up again with Maya Youssef, virtuoso kanun player, for a beautiful concert at St John the Evangelist in Oxford, presented by Late Junction’s Max Reinhardt and featuring pieces from Syria, Azerbaijan and Egypt and some improvisation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bwx00IX08do&list=UUlACKVwNy8ZaqBQoiiUJV7A&index=1&feature=plcp

We also premiered some works at LSO St Lukes for string quartet, piano and saxophone by the wonderful Andew McCormack and Jason Yarde, before we went into the studio and recorded them for something that we hope will be released later this year…

There are some EXCITING things in the pipeline for 2013 and 2014, including a trip to Paris to record with Rainier Lericolais, a performance at Spitalfields Festival with a new score for a short animation and some other things that are just too exciting and too secret just now…!

More news soon.

It’s autumn…

So, the last few months flew by (quite literally). The website is not so new anymore, but it is still shiny. Here are some snapshots of the Elysian Quartet’s summer:

New website!

Hello! Here is our brand new shiny website.

We’re currently rehearsing Stockhausen’s Helicopter String Quartet for Birmingham Opera’s production of Mittwoch aus Licht. Incredibly exciting.

Here are a couple of photos of our first rehearsal with musical director Kathinka Pasveer and Sound Intermedia’s Ian Dearden….
